The Cook Islands has two main destinations to visit plus a handful of remote islands with small local guesthouses. The main island is
Rarotonga with the capital Avarua and the international airport. Rarotonga is a good base for exploring with lots of accommodation including several large beach hotels and many more small resorts, villas and self-catering motels. Rarotonga is very laid back with good beaches, some excellent day tours and attractions, scuba diving, independant restaurants, good nightlife and lots of mopeds for getting about. Aitutaki, about 40 minutes flight to the north, is a flat island with a stunning lagoon with lots of tiny atolls around the reef. There are several day tours to visit the motu islands with great snorkelling and fantastic beaches. Aitutaki is very laid back with only a dozen or so places to stay including a few small luxury resorts and guesthouses. Facilities on Aitutaki are limited.

One of the unique features about the Cook islands is its numerous holiday homes which offer good value for money for families and privacy for couples.
